PARTIAL TRANSCRIPTION OF PAGE 108

Transcriber's note: Most of this page (not transcribed here) is dedicated to listing expenses from JPH's March 1857 stay in London. The following paragraph is found in the lower right portion of the page. JW

Breakfast and Tea in England are almost always simply of Tea or Coffee with bread or toast and butter, when charged at 1/6 [1 shilling and sixpence] and sometimes these are charged at 2/. For a chop, or steak is ordered, or a damson or apple tart, or Ham in addition to the above, 6d additional price is usually charged.

I have been at English hotels where Table d'Hôte is served, (but this is unusual) where a much fuller meal is given at 1/6.

The usual price of dinner in England is 2/6 or 62 cents for a soup, milk, a joint and [illegible] dishes of vegetables + bread and + cheese, nicely served. I speak of the commercial hotels. The higher grades of hotels are usually dearer and less comfortable, and the Roadside inns are often cheaper and generally [illegible] delightful.
