Early life and education (Hazard Diary 010)
Jos. Peace Hazard of Peacedale, R.I.
Of the Castle at Sea Side, was born, at Burlington, New Jersey, on 17th of 2d month - of February 1807 - but moved to the opposite of the Delaware River, to the Brick House, in Bristol, Pa, when he was about three weeks old.
He remained there until when on June 15, 1816, he was sent to Friends Boarding School at West Town - in the beautiful county of Chester, in Pennsylvania and where his number was 977 of the First Thousand of its record of pupils.
In August 1820, I left West Town and went to my parents' home in South Kingstown, Rhode Island - at the Dale Carlia place, that is near to and adjoins the Estate of my father, upon which he founded Peacedale Mills, that are in operation to this day, only on a largely extended scale.
On the 7th day of January 1822, I returned to West Town School, with Number 252 of the second thousand of the Catalogue of Pupils, as it stood at that time.
I left the school finally - about the first of May 1823 - but have made numerous visits thereto since, the last of them being in the years 1881-1882, with my friend Benjamin Jones Leedom, [continued on next page]
