Transcriber’s note: This page contains financial accounting (not transcribed here) from travels in England and Scotland in 1860, with summary calculations of funds spent and miles traveled 1856--1860, plus two narrative statements. JW

"My breakfast is always of tea, or coffee and bread and butter, without eggs, meat, or relish--same with my tea--While in Europe, however, I generally took only two meals per day--sleeping late, taking breakfast late, and then a 'tea dinner' in England, a dinner on the continent after the day's journey was ended - my tea dinner being a dinner and tea together - I usually took a roll from my pocket on the road if it was needed. Slept late in morning, sat up late at night, and rarely travelled after dark, and got along too fast then"

I was abroad 1617 days. Travelled by land and sea, 54310 miles, nearly 89 miles per day, at cost of $4852.78, exactly 3 dollars per day. For personal transportation, Rail and Steamer fares, I spent about 6 cts per mile. This would be about $3258 dollars, leaving about $1595 dollars, for hotel fares, clothing, and my very modest 'Pocket Money'.
